Housing Technology: BLP's eco-tool takes flight.
Technical buildings and insurance specialist BLP has announced the development of an online sustainability planning tool. The Butterfly product is expected to incorporate lifecycle, fabric, embodied and operational energy and carbon metrics as well as a Code for Sustainable Homes calculator. It will also include default building models and a library of optional building elements, assemblies, and energy and carbon data that users can select to model specific buildings.
The £1.25 million project is part-funded by the government’s Technology Strategy Board and will be completed by 2012. As well as BLP, the Butterfly development team includes representatives from Cambridge University’s Centre for Sustainable Development, University College London’s Energy Institute and Willmott Dixon Housing.
Simon Main, managing director, BLP, said, “Butterfly will represent a great leap forward by giving the full picture of whole-life cost and value in a carbon context. With Butterfly, we are responding to the need to help the supply chain address the design and construction of low-carbon, energy-efficient buildings.”
