Legal, Claims and Code Senior Executive

Working arrangements: Monday to Friday 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.
London: London office with occasional working from home

BLP are a leading provider of both Commercial and Residential Inherent Defects Insurance acting as a bespoke Underwriting Agent of Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty SE and others.

Overall objective of role:

An opportunity has risen for a legally qualified individual to work with BLP to manage the following requirements:

  1. Insurance contracts, drafting and review
  2. Compliance with all regulatory requirements arising from such contracts
  3. Claims handling and administration
  4. Legal requirements arising from the running and administration of the Consumer Code

Specific responsibilities:

  • Review and update contracts between BLP and all third parties
  • Responsible for legal review of all BLP documentation
  • Working closely with insurers on documentation including Underwriting Agency Agreement and Service Level Agreements
  • Liaising with insurers and loss adjusters in respect of contracts and claims
  • Ensure relevant teams/functions are kept up to date and trained on reporting processes for claims and Code requirements
  • Managing complaints relating to claims and the Code in conjunction with the COO.
  • Review and understand contractual wordings and interpret meanings/cross reference documentation to ensure consistency of definitions
  • Report on claims trends and feed back into policy review
  • Attend BLP Operations committee
  • Work closely with the Underwriting team

Projects and other tasks:

  • Support the required process with the Consumer Code for New Homes (CCNH) and others to achieve one industry Consumer Code

Person specification:

  • Legally qualified - essential
  • Understanding of, or familiar with, construction and insurance law - essential
  • Previous claims handling experience - essential
  • Ability to analyse and interpret information quickly
  • Ability to review and understand contractual wordings and interpret meanings/cross reference documentation to ensure consistency of definitions
  • High ethical standards
  • Excellent written, oral, communication and interpersonal skills. Able to explain complex matters succinctly.
  • Strong attention to detail

Inherent Defects Commercial Underwriter

Reports to:  Underwriting Director
Working Arrangements: Full time, Monday – Friday 9.00 – 5.00
Location: London Office, with occasional travel mainly in the UK

BLP are a leading provider of both Commercial and Residential Inherent Defects Insurance acting as a bespoke Underwriting Agent of Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty SE and others. This role centres on commercial projects ranging from small logistics/distribution through mixed development residential and retail combined up to major office and retail developments. 

Overall objective:

  • Key role with responsibility for underwriting and developing growth for an existing portfolio of Inherent Defects business.

Main responsibilities:

  • Supporting clients, usually but not exclusively brokers, throughout the transaction process including:
    • Advising brokers on BLP and the product
    • Underwriting new proposals and quoting on business that fits within the Underwriting criteria Advising on the status of enquiries, quotes, policies and technical process using a combination of a DMS, CRM, Underwriting and Audit Management IT system.
  • Supporting the internal Sales and Customer Support team throughout the quotation process including:
    • Producing quotes within the agreed SLA’s; outlining in a clear and concise manner our terms, conditions and any exclusions that may be applicable.

Projects and other tasks:

  • Being responsible for broked business within the delegated Underwriting Authority levels applicable
  • Managing the quotation process, following up, closing business, policy drafting and administration and ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of the production of broker documentation
  • Implementing and acting in accordance with KYC requirements and internal processes including sanctions checking of all potential clients
  • Adding to and maintaining customer/scheme details on the CRM and Underwriting systems
  • Responding to customers and colleague queries in a timely and accurate manner
  • Having an understanding of BLP vs Competitors and be able to advise brokers of the differences
  • Having an understanding of the BLP Policy wording ensuring you’re able to support both internal / external customers with any queries they may have
  • Proactively building and maintaining excellent client relationships
  • Assisting the Senior Underwriter/Underwriting Director in managing the team 

Person specification:

  • A minimum of 5 years current working knowledge of the construction insurance sector - essential
  • Experience of Underwriting in the construction insurance sector - desirable
  • Current working knowledge of IDI, CAR, PL and PI exposures - essential
  • An understanding of current construction techniques and methodologies - essential
  • ACII or progressing towards – desirable
  • Previous experience of business networking for sales opportunities – desirable

Research & Development Executive

Company background:

Overall objective:

  • To carry out and provide research and technical support for BLP Consult opportunities.
  • Research and development tasks as required to support the technical team and the company to achieve its business objectives.
  • Equivalent to academic Research Assistant or Senior Research Assistant grades.

Main responsibilities:

Work with the research and development team to:

  • Carry out life cycle cost and carbon fee earning projects.
  • Update BLP component data. Durability, service life data, maintenance and costs for existing and new components. Data for operational energy and carbon, embodied energy and carbon, and other metrics.
  • Assist with technical risk based assessments for example BOPAS.
  • Develop and program concepts, calculations and data for our life cycle cost, carbon and energy models.
  • Provide technical support for opportunities, client contact, presentations and publicity.
  • Assist with research for internal technical support and external research collaborations.
  • Assist in the overall aims of the BLP Consult to promote BLP as a centre of excellence.
  • Represent BLP on committees or industry working groups as required.

Skills:

  • Numerate construction based research, construction science.
  • Carbon and energy calculations, Life cycle costing, Modelling, Sustainability.
  • Working knowledge of construction good practice: British Standards, Building Regulations etc.
  • Software literate: word processing, spreadsheets, powerpoint.
  • Good communication skills: technical writing and spoken and presentational.
  • Experience and personal skills in working with a wide range of people.
  • Ability to work autonomously on own initiative as well as part of a team.

Desirable (but training will be provided):

  • Programming capability (Excel VBA and R in particular or other languages e.g. Python).
  • Research experience, particularly in component and component durability.
  • Other areas of knowledge: BIM, data science, building costs, taking off quantities.
