Politicians are setting great store in offsite manufactured housing delivering in both numbers and quality. Momentum is gathering pace but are factory-made homes really on the road to becoming mainstream? Denise Chevin reports.

There has been a sharp spike in registrations of offsite manufactured construction products, with the number accredited by the industry's main assurance body almost doubling last year to 20. The BuildOffsite Property Assurance Scheme (BOPAS) was jointly established five years ago by industry body BuildOffsite, BLP Insurance, The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and Lloyd’s Register, to provide more confidence and quality assurance for offsite products.

BLP Insurance, the specialist residential warranty and commercial latent defects insurer, announces that Swan Housing Group, one of the leading regeneration housing associations in the UK, has secured BOPAS (Buildoffsite Property Assurance Scheme) accreditation for its precision engineered, modular, cross-laminated timber (CLT) homes.

With the government announcing at the weekend plans to improve the home buying and selling process, the HomeOwners Alliance annual homeowner survey, sponsored by BLP Insurance and polled by YouGov, looks at whether homeowners and sellers agree with some of the government’s ideas on estate agent regulation.

According to a new Homeowner Survey, a massive 82% of UK adults back government proposals requiring estate agents to be licensed. The 2018 Homeowner Survey, an annual study conducted by the HomeOwners Alliance and BLP Insurance and polled by YouGov, to examine the concerns, views, and issues affecting British homeowners and aspiring homeowners, found that the vast majority of respondents (82%) support the idea of a government-backed license requiring estate agents to pass standardised tests before being able to practice.

'To address the chronic shortage of housing supply in the UK, panelists at the UK Finance Annual Mortgage Conference say that adopting modern construction methods and bringing in new players into the market are crucial steps to a successful response, but there remain obstacles' - writes Tim Chen of Mortgage Solutions

Kim Vernau, CEO at BLP Insurance, discusses how modern methods of construction and factory built houses should be embraced as part of the solution to the housing shortage.

Jeff Maxted, BLP's Director of Technical Consultancy, writes for Inside Housing. "Build-to-rent can offer a viable solution to the housing crisis as long as building standards don’t slip", says Jeff Maxted. "The build-to-rent sector is growing rapidly, and shows little sign of letting up. With a recent study by the British Property Federation predicting population growth of around 9.7 million between 2014 and 2039, the demand for housing in the UK will only increase."
