Oarsome BLP'ers give good account of themselves at The Big Row
- Date: 13/09/2013
BLP's crew, the Oarsome BLP'ers, participated in the BIG ROW charity event on 11th September to help raise money to complete the renovation of the Chauncy Maples, Africa's oldest floating ship, into a mobile medical clinic.
The event saw 77 crews compete against each other in Spitalfields Traders Market to row the fastest 10,000 metres. BLP's crew came 31st in a very respectable 39 minutes 19 seconds. The Royal Navy won in 32 minutes 10 seconds!
The Chauncy Maples will sail to the remotest fishing villages surrounding Lake Malawi where malaria, TB and HIV/AIDS are prevalent and will have the necessary equipment on board to treat locals. The renovation of this 1899 ship is under way in Monkey Bay and she is expected to go into service from the end of 2014.
