BLP Insurance announces winners of ‘Freedom to Create’ construction competition
- Date: 12/03/2015
BLP Insurance, the specialist residential and commercial insurer, has announced the winning entries of its ‘Freedom to Create’ construction competition.
Jason Cornish, Fielden Clegg Bradley Studios, took first prize in the competition which required entrants to come up with the most creative and innovative design possible with just 60 LEGO bricks. With a design based on the tram tower at the top of the Hong Kong peak, Jason wins a weekend trip away for a family of four in the Legoland® Windsor Resort. The second prize of a £200 Gordon Ramsay restaurant voucher went to Craig Bolton, West and Machell Architects, for his design of Emmet’s new radical LEGO house.
In line with BLP Insurance’s own construction ethos, which doesn’t constrain developers and architects with a technical manual and predetermined processes, the competition came without any building guidelines giving entrants the opportunity to really think outside the box.
The judging panel – Richard Saxon CBE, Jeff Maxted (BLP Insurance) and Ben Derbyshire (HTA Design) – found it challenging to select just two winners from such an inspiring range of entries and were impressed with the creativity expressed which clearly knows no boundaries.
Commenting on the winning design, Richard Saxon CBE, said: “I consider this to be very smart. It’s almost certainly a stylised model of Terry Farrell’s Peak Tram tower at the top of the Hong Kong Peak. The tram station is in red below and the observation platform above is given Chinese corners. So it’s a building and also well executed and presented.”
