"Grand design...but not for the faint hearted" - Sunday Express

  • Date: 23/04/2014

Our very own Jeff Maxted was featured in the Sunday Express, as Andrea Watson explored a medieval chapel looking for a saviour with imagination.

Steve Weaver is selling Horton Manor Chapel, used as a farm building since the Reformation, with planning permission for it to be converted into a family home. He is looking for someone to take on the renovation of the building, with architects plans in place to create four bedrooms across the chapel and the adjoining traditional oast house.

As part of these plans, BLP's own Jeff Maxted was called in to provide his expert opinion. His view of a potential restoration was optimistic, as he stated "As only the walls are left, the good thing is that there are no hidden problems, there are no horrors concealed within floors, roofs and behind claddings. You can see what repairs need to be done from the very beginning." He added, "There is a lot you can do to ensure a sustainable, well insulated development. English Heritage may allow insulated dry lining; and it is possible to heavily insulate the roof, ceiling and floors. You can also specify high performance level windows and doors."

Steve hopes to attract a fan of programmes such as Grand Designs, but until the Chapel finds its saviour, it remains home to Steve's colony of rare breed chickens.
