Employers must shine the light on productivity

Daylight exposure is considered to have the most influence on productivity for half of employees*, according to a survey by specialist insurance provider BLP Insurance, which analysed the impact of workplace design on productivity**.

The survey, which was conducted amongst professionals in the commercial property industry, found that over two thirds of respondents (72%) thought that open plan spaces, as opposed to private offices, promoted better productivity.  Given the choice, over half of respondents would prefer to work flexible hours, as opposed to open plan (43%), with private offices, hot desking and working from home falling to the bottom of the list.

Offices with spaces for social interaction were also thought to increase the productivity of the workforce according to 15% of respondents. In addition, air conditioning, proximity to amenities and transport links were also chosen as key features, whereas only a handful of respondents considered quiet areas and gyms to impact the productivity of employees.

There is a growing realisation of the link between employee productivity and the office environment. According to the survey, an overwhelming 97 per cent of employees believe that workplace design has an impact on productivity with over half of respondents strongly agreeing with the statement.

Brian Kilroy, Business Development Manager at BLP Insurance, says: “Businesses can no longer afford to ignore the influence that a good workplace design has on their employees’ productivity and consequently their bottom-line. Fluorescent lighting and cramped workspaces no longer cut it and businesses are having to stump up the cash to ensure the productivity and longevity of its workforce.

“Our survey is also valuable research for commercial developers who need to make the most of the current construction boom but also need to ensure the longevity of their buildings by making sure that they are designed to fit in with the changing needs of employees.

“As employers seek out more luxurious office space in popular locations to heighten the productivity of its workforce, commercial developers can’t afford not to protect their investment. Commercial latent defects insurance is gaining recognition in the industry as developers wise up to the benefits of protecting their investment against building failure, as well as making their offer more attractive to potential commercial tenants.”
